Mechanism of Action:Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs)
Use:
  • Treatment of bacterial infections such as pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis, and urinary tract infections
  • Prophylaxis for bacterial endocarditis in high-risk patients undergoing dental or surgical procedures
Side Effects:
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Rash, itching
  • Hypersensitivity reactions (e.g. anaphylaxis)
  • Superinfection (e.g. yeast infection)
Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity to penicillins or cephalosporins
  • History of cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction associated with amoxicillin use
