Drug Name:Aspirin
Drug Class:Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
Mechanism of Action:
  • Inhibits the production of prostaglandins by blocking the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX)
  • Inhibits platelet aggregation by blocking thromboxane A2 production
Use:
  • Relief of mild to moderate pain
  • Reduction of fever
  • Prevention of heart attacks and strokes in patients with a history of cardiovascular disease
Side Effects:
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Stomach ulcers
  • Tinnitus
  • Reye's syndrome (in children with viral infections)
Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity to aspirin or other NSAIDs
  • Active peptic ulcer disease
  • Bleeding disorders
  • Severe liver or kidney disease
