Mechanism of Action:
  • Inhibits sodium and chloride reabsorption in the distal convoluted tubule of the nephron
  • Increases excretion of sodium, chloride, and water
  • Reduces plasma volume and cardiac output
Use:
  • Hypertension
  • Edema associated with heart failure, cirrhosis, or renal dysfunction
Side Effects:
  • Hypokalemia
  • Hyponatremia
  • Dehydration
  • Hypotension
  • Hyperuricemia
  • Hyperglycemia
  • Photosensitivity
Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity to thiazides or sulfonamides
  • Anuria
  • Severe renal impairment
  • Hepatic coma
  • Electrolyte depletion
