Drug Class:Alpha-2 Adrenergic Agonist
Mechanism of Action:
  • Stimulates alpha-2 adrenergic receptors in the brainstem, reducing sympathetic outflow to the heart and blood vessels
  • Reduces aqueous humor production and increases uveoscleral outflow, lowering intraocular pressure
Use:
  • Treatment of open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension
Side Effects:
  • Ocular hyperemia
  • Burning or stinging sensation in the eye
  • Dry mouth
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity to brimonidine or any component of the formulation
  • Severe cardiovascular disease
