Drug Name:Carbimazole
Drug Class:Thioamide antithyroid agent
Mechanism of Action:
  • Inhibits the synthesis of thyroid hormones by blocking the iodination of tyrosine residues in thyroglobulin
  • Reduces the conversion of T4 to T3 in peripheral tissues
Use:
  • Treatment of hyperthyroidism
  • Preparation for thyroidectomy or radioactive iodine therapy
Side Effects:
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Agranulocytosis
  • Rash
  • Joint pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity to carbimazole or other thioamides
