Mechanism of Action:
  • Blocks dopamine receptors in the brain
  • Also blocks serotonin and histamine receptors
Use:
  • Treatment of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders
  • Management of severe nausea and vomiting
  • Adjunctive therapy for severe anxiety
Side Effects:
  • Sedation
  • Dry mouth
  • Constipation
  • Blurred vision
  • Orthostatic hypotension
  • Extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS)
  • Tardive dyskinesia (TD)
Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity to chlorpromazine or other phenothiazines
  • Coma or CNS depression
  • Severe hypotension
  • Liver disease
  • Blood dyscrasias
