Mechanism of Action:
  • Inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit
Use:
  • Treatment of respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis)
  • Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
  • Treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection in combination with other drugs
Side Effects:
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Headache
  • Taste disturbances
  • Rash
Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity to clarithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics
  • History of cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction
  • Concomitant use with certain medications (e.g. astemizole, cisapride, pimozide)
