Drug Class:Selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM)
Mechanism of Action:
  • Blocks estrogen receptors in the hypothalamus and pituitary gland
  • Increases secretion of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH)
  • Induces ovulation
Use:
  • Treatment of female infertility due to anovulation
  • Stimulation of ovulation in women undergoing assisted reproductive technology (ART)
  • Off-label use in men with hypogonadism to increase testosterone levels
Side Effects:
  • Hot flashes
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Breast tenderness
  • Headache
  • Visual disturbances
  • Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS)
Contraindications:
  • Pregnancy
  • Liver disease
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Ovarian cysts or enlargement
  • Hypersensitivity to clomifene
