Mechanism of Action:
  • Blocks dopamine and serotonin receptors in the brain
  • Also has antagonistic effects on other neurotransmitter receptors
Use:
  • Treatment of schizophrenia
  • Reduction of suicidal behavior in patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder
Side Effects:
  • Agranulocytosis (low white blood cell count)
  • Seizures
  • Weight gain
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Constipation
  • Dry mouth
Contraindications:
  • History of agranulocytosis
  • Uncontrolled epilepsy
  • Severe CNS depression
  • Myeloproliferative disorders
