Drug Name:Co-amoxiclav
Drug Class:Antibiotic
Mechanism of Action:Combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. Amoxicillin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins. Clavulanic acid inhibits beta-lactamase enzymes that can inactivate amoxicillin.
Use:
  • Treatment of bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and dental infections
  • Prophylaxis against infections during surgical procedures
Side Effects:
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Skin rash
  • Hypersensitivity reactions such as anaphylaxis
  • Liver dysfunction
Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity to penicillins or cephalosporins
  • History of cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction associated with co-amoxiclav use
