  • Binds to iron and forms a stable complex that is excreted in the urine
  • Reduces the toxicity of excess iron in the body
Use:
  • Treatment of acute iron poisoning
  • Treatment of chronic iron overload in patients receiving repeated blood transfusions
  • Treatment of aluminum toxicity in patients with renal failure
Side Effects:
  • Nausea and vomiting
