  • Binds to and activates alpha-adrenergic, dopaminergic, and serotonergic receptors in the smooth muscle of the uterus
  • Induces sustained contractions of the uterus
Use:
  • Prevention and treatment of postpartum hemorrhage
  • Induction of labor
  • Management of incomplete or inevitable abortion
Side Effects:
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Headache
  • Hypertension
  • Uterine cramping
  • Chest pain
  • Dyspnea
Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity to ergot alkaloids
  • Hypertension
  • Preeclampsia
  • Eclampsia
  • Severe hepatic or renal impairment
  • History of cardiovascular disease
