Drug Name:Erythromycin
Drug Class:Macrolide Antibiotic
Mechanism of Action:
  • Inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit
Use:
  • Treatment of respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and sexually transmitted infections
  • Prophylaxis of rheumatic fever in patients allergic to penicillin
Side Effects:
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain, cramping
  • Allergic reactions (rash, itching, hives)
  • QT prolongation (rare)
Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity to erythromycin or other macrolide antibiotics
  • Concomitant use with drugs that prolong QT interval
  • Liver disease
