Drug Name:Ethambutol
Drug Class:Antituberculosis agent
Mechanism of Action:
  • Inhibits the synthesis of mycobacterial cell wall by blocking the incorporation of mycolic acids
  • Bacteriostatic against actively growing tubercle bacilli
Use:
  • Treatment of tuberculosis in combination with other antituberculosis agents
Side Effects:
  • Optic neuritis (visual acuity, color vision, and visual fields should be monitored)
  • Hyperuricemia
  • GI upset
  • Rash
  • Peripheral neuropathy
Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity to ethambutol
  • Optic neuritis
  • Children under 13 years of age
