Mechanism of Action:
  • Inhibits the reabsorption of sodium and chloride in the ascending loop of Henle
  • Increases the excretion of water, sodium, chloride, magnesium, potassium, and calcium
Use:
  • Edema associated with heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis, or renal disease
  • Hypertension
  • Hypercalcemia
  • Pulmonary edema
Side Effects:
  • Dehydration
  • Electrolyte imbalances (hypokalemia, hyponatremia, hypomagnesemia, hypocalcemia)
  • Hypotension
  • Ototoxicity
  • Hyperuricemia
  • Hyperglycemia
Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity to furosemide or sulfonamides
  • Anuria
  • Hepatic coma
  • Severe electrolyte depletion
