Drug Name:Gentamycin
Drug Class:Aminoglycoside Antibiotic
Mechanism of Action:
  • Inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit
  • Causes misreading of mRNA, leading to inhibition of protein synthesis and ultimately bacterial cell death
Use:
  • Treatment of serious infections caused by susceptible gram-negative bacteria
  • Used in combination with other antibiotics for empiric therapy of sepsis
Side Effects:
  • Nephrotoxicity
  • Ototoxicity
  • Neuromuscular blockade
  • Allergic reactions
Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity to gentamycin or other aminoglycosides
  • Pre-existing renal or auditory impairment
  • Myasthenia gravis
