Drug Class:Immune response modifier
Mechanism of Action:
  • Stimulates the immune system by activating toll-like receptor 7 (TLR7) on dendritic cells and macrophages
  • Induces the production of cytokines, including interferon-alpha, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and interleukin-12
Use:
  • Topical treatment of external genital and perianal warts caused by human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Topical treatment of actinic keratosis (AK), a precancerous skin condition
  • Topical treatment of superficial basal cell carcinoma (sBCC), a type of skin cancer
Side Effects:
  • Local skin reactions, such as redness, itching, burning, and flaking
  • Flu-like symptoms, such as fever, fatigue, and headache
  • Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
  • Rarely, severe allergic reactions
Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity to imiquimod or any component of the formulation
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
