Drug Name:Indomethacin
Drug Class:Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
Mechanism of Action:Inhibits the activity of cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, which are responsible for the production of prostaglandins that cause inflammation, pain, and fever.
Use:
  • Relief of pain, swelling, and stiffness caused by arthritis, gout, and other inflammatory conditions
  • Treatment of acute gouty arthritis
  • Closure of patent ductus arteriosus in premature infants
Side Effects:
  • Gastrointestinal upset (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain)
  • Headache, dizziness, drowsiness
  • Increased risk of bleeding
  • Fluid retention, edema
  • Hypertension
  • Liver and kidney damage
Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity to indomethacin or other NSAIDs
  • Active peptic ulcer disease
  • Severe heart failure
  • Severe renal impairment
  • Third trimester of pregnancy
