Drug Class:Antiparasitic agent
Mechanism of Action:
  • Binds to glutamate-gated chloride channels in invertebrate nerve and muscle cells, leading to increased permeability and hyperpolarization of the cells, resulting in paralysis and death of the parasite
  • Also has anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties
Use:
  • Treatment of parasitic infections such as onchocerciasis (river blindness), strongyloidiasis, and scabies
  • Also used off-label for the treatment of COVID-19
Side Effects:
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Dizziness, headache
  • Skin rash, itching
  • Rarely, severe allergic reactions
Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity to ivermectin or any component of the formulation
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Concomitant use with certain medications, such as warfarin
