Drug Name:Levomepromazine
Drug Class:Phenothiazine antipsychotic
Mechanism of Action:
  • Blocks dopamine and serotonin receptors in the brain
  • Also has antihistamine and anticholinergic effects
Use:
  • Treatment of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders
  • Management of severe nausea and vomiting
  • Adjunctive therapy for severe pain
Side Effects:
  • Sedation
  • Orthostatic hypotension
  • Anticholinergic effects (dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, urinary retention)
  • Extrapyramidal symptoms (tremors, rigidity, akathisia, tardive dyskinesia)
  • Increased risk of seizures
  • Photosensitivity
Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity to levomepromazine or other phenothiazines
  • Comatose states
  • CNS depression
  • Severe hypotension
  • Severe liver or kidney disease
  • Blood dyscrasias
