Mechanism of Action:
  • Inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit
Use:
  • Treatment of respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis)
  • Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
  • Treatment of sexually transmitted infections (chlamydia, gonorrhea)
  • Prophylaxis for endocarditis in dental procedures for patients with certain heart conditions
Side Effects:
  • Gastrointestinal upset (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea)
  • Hepatotoxicity
  • QT prolongation
  • Allergic reactions (rash, anaphylaxis)
Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity to macrolides
  • Concomitant use with certain medications (e.g. statins, antiarrhythmics) that can increase the risk of QT prolongation
  • Severe hepatic impairment
