Mechanism of Action:Stimulates alpha-2 receptors in the brainstem, reducing sympathetic outflow and decreasing peripheral vascular resistance
Use:
  • First-line treatment for hypertension in pregnancy
  • May also be used for gestational hypertension and preeclampsia
Side Effects:
  • Sedation
  • Dry mouth
  • Headache
  • Depression
  • Hepatitis
  • Hemolytic anemia
Contraindications:
  • Active liver disease
  • History of depression
  • Concurrent use of MAO inhibitors
