Drug Name:Naproxen
Drug Class:Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
Mechanism of Action:Inhibits the activity of cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, which are responsible for the production of prostaglandins that cause pain, inflammation, and fever.
Use:
  • Relief of pain and inflammation associated with various conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, menstrual cramps, and headache.
  • Fever reduction.
Side Effects:
  • Gastrointestinal effects such as nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia, and abdominal pain.
  • Cardiovascular effects such as increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
  • Renal effects such as fluid retention, edema, and kidney damage.
  • Hematologic effects such as anemia and bleeding disorders.
  • Hepatic effects such as liver damage and hepatitis.
Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity to naproxen or other NSAIDs.
  • History of asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs.
  • Active gastrointestinal bleeding or ulceration.
  • Severe renal impairment or failure.
  • Severe hepatic impairment or failure.
  • Third trimester of pregnancy.
