Mechanism of Action:
  • Inhibits the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme in the gastric parietal cells, reducing acid secretion
Use:
  • Treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Treatment of peptic ulcer disease
  • Treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
  • Prevention of stress ulcers in critically ill patients
Side Effects:
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Flatulence
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency
  • Hypomagnesemia
  • Increased risk of bone fractures
Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity to omeprazole or other proton pump inhibitors
  • Co-administration with drugs that require acidic pH for absorption (e.g. ketoconazole, iron supplements)
  • Severe hepatic impairment
