Mechanism of Action:
  • Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs)
Use:
  • Treatment of streptococcal pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and skin infections caused by susceptible organisms
Side Effects:
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Hypersensitivity reactions (rash, itching, anaphylaxis)
  • Superinfection (overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms)
Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity to penicillins or cephalosporins
  • History of severe hypersensitivity reactions to any beta-lactam antibiotic
