Mechanism of Action:
  • Binds to estrogen receptors and modulates their activity in different tissues
  • Agonist in bone and antagonist in breast and uterus
Use:
  • Prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women
  • Reduction of risk of invasive breast cancer in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis or at high risk for breast cancer
Side Effects:
  • Hot flashes
  • Leg cramps
  • Increased risk of venous thromboembolism
  • Increased risk of stroke
  • Increased risk of death from stroke in women with pre-existing coronary heart disease
Contraindications:
  • Pregnancy and lactation
  • History of venous thromboembolism
  • History of stroke or transient ischemic attack
  • Severe liver disease
