Mechanism of Action:
  • Inhibits bacterial RNA polymerase, preventing transcription and protein synthesis
Use:
  • Treats tuberculosis and other mycobacterial infections
  • Used in combination with other antibiotics for treatment of staphylococcal and streptococcal infections
Side Effects:
  • Hepatotoxicity
  • Gastrointestinal disturbances
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Red-orange discoloration of urine, sweat, and tears
Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity to rifampicin
  • Severe hepatic impairment
  • Concurrent use with protease inhibitors or non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors
