Mechanism of Action:Inhibits bacterial RNA synthesis by binding to the beta-subunit of RNA polymerase
Use:
  • Treatment of tuberculosis
  • Prophylaxis of meningococcal meningitis
  • Treatment of leprosy
Side Effects:
  • Hepatotoxicity
  • Flu-like syndrome
  • Gastrointestinal upset
  • Red-orange discoloration of bodily fluids
Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity to rifampin
  • Severe hepatic impairment
  • Concurrent use with protease inhibitors or non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors
