Mechanism of Action:
  • Blocks dopamine and serotonin receptors in the brain
  • Also has some alpha-adrenergic and histamine receptor blocking activity
Use:
  • Schizophrenia
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Irritability associated with autism
Side Effects:
  • Weight gain
  • Sedation
  • Extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) such as tremors, rigidity, and akathisia
  • Hyperprolactinemia
  • Increased risk of diabetes and dyslipidemia
Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity to risperidone
  • Severe CNS depression
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Dementia-related psychosis
