Drug Class:Antibiotic
Mechanism of Action:Combination of piperacillin and tazobactam. Piperacillin is a penicillin antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Tazobactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that prevents the destruction of piperacillin by beta-lactamase enzymes produced by some bacteria.
Use:Treatment of infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including intra-abdominal infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and respiratory tract infections.
Side Effects:Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headache, and rash. Rare but serious side effects include allergic reactions, seizures, and liver damage.
Contraindications:Hypersensitivity to penicillins or beta-lactamase inhibitors.
