Drug Class:Monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI)
Mechanism of Action:
  • Irreversible inhibition of monoamine oxidase (MAO) enzyme
  • Increases levels of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine in the brain
Use:
  • Major depressive disorder
  • Social anxiety disorder
  • Panic disorder
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
Side Effects:
  • Hypertensive crisis (severe headache, palpitations, chest pain, sweating, nausea, vomiting, confusion, seizures)
  • Insomnia
  • Dry mouth
  • Constipation
  • Weight gain
  • Sexual dysfunction
Contraindications:
  • Concurrent use with other MAOIs, SSRIs, or certain other medications
  • History of cerebrovascular disease, hypertension, or cardiovascular disease
  • Liver or kidney disease
  • Pheochromocytoma
  • Tyramine-rich foods (aged cheese, cured meats, beer, wine, etc.)
