Drug Name:Triptans
Drug Class:Serotonin (5-HT1B/1D) receptor agonists
Mechanism of Action:
  • Selective agonists of serotonin (5-HT1B/1D) receptors in the brain
  • Inhibit the release of vasoactive peptides and reduce inflammation
  • Constrict dilated blood vessels in the brain
Use:
  • Acute treatment of migraine attacks with or without aura
  • Not effective for prophylaxis or treatment of tension-type headaches
Side Effects:
  • Chest tightness or pressure
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Somnolence
  • Tingling or numbness
Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity to triptans
  • History of ischemic heart disease, stroke, or transient ischemic attack
  • Uncontrolled hypertension
  • Use within 24 hours of ergotamine or another triptan
  • Use within 2 weeks of MAO inhibitors
