  • Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to D-alanyl-D-alanine terminus of cell wall precursors
  • Bactericidal
Use:
  • Treatment of serious infections caused by gram-positive bacteria
  • Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections
  • Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea
Side Effects:
  • Nephrotoxicity
  • Ototoxicity
  • Red man syndrome (flushing, rash, pruritus)
Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity to vancomycin
  • Renal impairment
  • Hearing impairment
