Mechanism of Action:
  • blocks dopamine and serotonin receptors in the brain
  • also has antagonistic effects on histamine and alpha-adrenergic receptors
Use:
  • treatment of schizophrenia
  • treatment of bipolar disorder
  • adjunctive treatment of major depressive disorder
Side Effects:
  • sedation
  • weight gain
  • dry mouth
  • constipation
  • dizziness
  • orthostatic hypotension
  • extrapyramidal symptoms
  • increased risk of diabetes and hyperlipidemia
Contraindications:
  • hypersensitivity to quetiapine or any component of the formulation
  • concomitant use with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors or inducers
  • history of QT prolongation or cardiac arrhythmias
